What to Bring/What We Provide to Novices

(Note: If you are registering as a specialist or generalist member of a Taxon Team, click here to see what we provide for you. The following list applies to novices, general volunteers, media or other visitors.)

What to bring:

  • Reusable water bottles
  • Sunblock/Ivy block
  • Insect repellent
  • Tents and other camping gear if camping
  • Cameras
  • Binoculars
  • Flashlight/Headlamp
  • Weather and site-appropriate clothing
  • Sturdy water shoes and swimsuit if you would like to participate in mussel or other stream survey

This event is outdoors and will be held rain or shine. Please dress appropriately, and remember to bring a water bottle. It may be hot, so plan on staying well-hydrated. This site is wild, so terrain may be rough. Hiking sticks may be helpful. Proper footwear (sturdy hiking boots/shoes) will be necessary. Hazards such as poison ivy, ticks, and rattlesnakes may be encountered on this property. INHF will have first aid kits on hand, but bring any medicine (allergy medication, inhalers, etc.) you might need. A safety evacuation plan has been arranged with medical authorities in the area.

What we provide to novices:

  • Bulk water for drinking and washing
  • Ice
  • Base camp with tables, chairs, and tents for shade
  • Microscopes on-site to examine specimens
  • Some kids' activities at base camp
  • Porta-potties

Food:

You may bring your own food and beverages or sign up for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner for a nominal fee. Please answer the appropriate questions on the registration forms so that we order enough food.

For more information, e-mail Marlene Ehresman, or call (515) 288-1846
