Blue Wing Marsh expanded

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently added 47 acres to the 570-acre Blue Wing Marsh in Palo Alto County. INHF provided interim ownership while the state secured project funding.

Located less than a mile from Lost Island Lake, the addition helps protect the lake’s watershed, thus improving water quality. The IDNR’s restoration plans include diverse wildlife habitat, including prairie plantings, wetlands and three open water ponds. It will open late this year for public hunting, bird-watching and other uses.

“We sincerely appreciate INHF’s assistance with this addition. A lot of these things wouldn’t get done without you folks,” said Tom Neal, an IDNR Wildlife Biologist.
