Other 25th anniversary projects

This article first appeared in INHF's Winter 2007 magazine.

In addition to the featured projects mentioned, INHF also helped partners complete seven other land projects in 1982. Our roles included landowner negotiations, fundraising and/or temporary ownership. Today these sites provide outdoor recreational activities, educational programs or simply a quiet place to experience nature.

4. Saw Mill Hollow Wildlife Area

Location: 6 miles north of Missouri Valley

Reasons to visit: Located in the Loess Hills, this rugged, 155-acre site provides diverse wildlife habitat. Visitors can enjoy hunting, fishing, boating and hiking trails.

Contact: Harrison County Conservation Board, 712-647-2785

5. Strasser Woods Preserve

Location: East side of Des Moines

Reasons to visit: This 40.5-acre parcel—with its hiking trails, wildlife, mix of deciduous woodlands and abundance of wildflowers—is a natural island in an urban area. INHF had the area dedicated as a state preserve and transferred ownership to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Contact: Iowa DNR, 515-238-4849

6 Vandalia Wildlife Area

Location: 4 miles south and 4 miles west of Prairie City

Reasons to visit: INHF helped the county acquire a 60-acre tract as part of this 97-acre site. Mostly wooded, the area abounds with wildlife. It is particularly popular with hunters.

Contact: Jasper County Conservation Board, 641-792-9780

7 Fleming Woods Preserve

Location: 2 miles west of Montezuma

Reasons to visit: This 38-acre area contains high quality native timber. INHF had the site, especially noted for its diverse plant life, dedicated as a state preserve to ensure the protection of its great resources.

Contact: Poweshiek County Conservation Board, 515-623-3191

8 Criss Cove Area

Location: 8 miles south of Winterset

Reasons to visit: This 45-acre tract now contains a trail, picnic facilities and updated campsites. It is also a popular site for fishing—particularly after the addition of two new fishing jetties—and for discovering plant, animal and insect life.

Contact: Madison County Conservation Board, 515-462-3536

9 Pierce Creek Recreation Area

Location: 4 miles north of Shenandoah, 3 miles west of Essex

Reasons to visit: INHF added 80 acres to the larger Pierce Creek Recreation Area, which contains timber and pasture adjacent to portions of Pierce Creek Lake. The area’s many recreational uses include camping, hiking, fishing and hunting.

Contact:  Page County Conservation Board, 712-542-3864

10 Camp Wapello
