Important land in Iowa Great Lakes watershed protected by INHF
An important site just off the northeast shore of Big Spirit Lake has been acquired by Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, with the goal of managing the land in ways that benefit water quality.
The 160-acre site was purchased by INHF from the John D. McDonald Trust with the help of generous donors. Plans are underway for INHF to own this land long-term for conservation purposes after raising the remaining funds needed.
INHF is grateful to John McDonald for making this choice for the future of his family land. We’re intent on making great decisions here that will benefit the lake and the community long into the future.
In the coming months, INHF staff will gather background information and ideas from neighbors, community leaders, ag innovators and conservation peers about this site and its potential. This will help our staff and board develop creative and exciting plans for the land that will serve the community as well as the land, water and wildlife.
